Moderator Training

By Tom Beggs, Focus Group Moderator (CFGD)

Atlanta Business Chronicle

It is through decades of experience that one truly becomes a master of focus group design, recruiting, moderation, analysis and reporting. In Tom's case, this experience includes working for some of the brightest minds in marketing at the largest of research firms, agencies and end users, such as:

Moderator training should be designed and delivered by an expert with his or her own deep, current, and relevant experience and training. Driven more by practice than theory. Review Five Very Important Reasons (industries, clients, projects) why Tom is hired by global organizations, those who know and require masters in the art and science of focus group design and moderation.

Oglethorpe University/ G.S.U.

Tom earned an academic scholarship at Oglethorpe University, and maintained a 3.3 GPA in graduate school at Georgia State University, taking every undergraduate and graduate course offered in marketing research.

Greeley Institute

Tom completed his Certified Focus Group Director (CFGD) training from Greeley Institute in 1999. This is similar to programs offered by RIVA Training Institute and Burke Institute.

While working on the client side in the New Products Research Group at Turner Broadcasting, Tom completed training in 2005 at Synectics on moderation for new product development purposes.

Moderator Training

In 2009, Tom began offering custom training to organizations and individuals interested in learning best practices, maximizing ROI, what works, what doesn't and why in managing or moderating focus groups.

tech icon In-person Training
Tom designs and delivers in-person training at your location so that you can include not only those interested in moderating groups, but those managing the process and/or responsible for the success of focus group engagements. This frequently includes student observation of Tom moderating beta groups and can include Tom reviewing student moderation of beta groups.
hc icon Remote Training
When multiple parties in multiple locations are utilizing the training, or when logistics, timing or budget are not suited to in-person training, Tom can conduct training remotely via phone and online using a WebEx like system (only better than WebEx). Here again this can also include demonstration and review of beta groups, and these are conducted via phone/web.
comm icon One-on-one Support
Tom determines individual needs and goals for the instruction, and then checks for understanding, barriers, and best ways to implement learnings at the student level.
ind icon Review of First Group (after training)
Your training with Tom includes post training review of student performance on his or her first group - even if this is months after the training is held (although such a delay is not recommended)

Feedback (Client Survey - Tom vs. Other Moderators)

88% Complete (success)
Overall Satisfaction - Better with Tom 88%
Response Time - Better with Tom 100%
Proactive on Your Behalf - Better with Tom 79%
Quality of Deliverables - Better with Tom 65%
ROI on the Engagement - Better with Tom 88%

A Great Record.

Ongoing client satisfaction surveys indicate that Tom compares favorably to other moderators across numerous dimensions. Yes, it's only 20 something of Tom's large clients - but most have significant experience with other moderators (on that note, see agency client text in between focus groups...).
